The Dangers of Turbulence.

Approximately 60 people are injured in the United States every year from turbulence, and while rare, turbulence has even caused fatalities. This is why it is critical to wear seat belts when the seat belt sign is illuminated, and flight crews recommend keeping your seatbelt fastened at all times when seated. Here are just a few of the types of turbulence airline jets may encounter:

  • Clear Air Turbulence: This is one of the most dangerous types of turbulence for airline passengers because it occurs in cloudless skies, making it hard to see or predict. It usually occurs at altitudes above 15,000 feet, when airline jets are in cruise and the seatbelt sign is off.

  • Convective Turbulence: Warm air rises, which results in bumpy vertical air currents. Under the right conditions, intense cumulonimbus clouds can form, creating powerful thunderstorms with violent updrafts and downdrafts. Some cumulonimbus clouds may tower over 50,000 feet above sea level, which is higher than airline jets can fly.

  • Mountain Wave Turbulence: This turbulence occurs when strong winds blow over a mountain range, forming large waves and swirling air pockets on the downwind side.

  • Wake Turbulence: This type of turbulence is created by another aircraft. When aircraft generate lift, they displace air and create spiraling wind vortices, sort of like how a ship displaces water and creates waves behind it. Heavier aircraft create stronger wake turbulence.

Other In-Flight Injuries.

  • Noxious chemicals and fumes

  • Puncture wounds and possible infection from hypodermic needles left behind by prior passengers

WHAT’S YOUR CASE WORTH?

Factors to Consider.

❖

MEDICAL BILLS

The strongest proof that you were injured are medical bills. This is why it is critical to promptly seek medical care from doctors after the accident.

❖

LOSS OF INCOME

If you missed work or are no longer able to work because of your injury, this can make your case more valuable.

❖

PAIN & SUFFERING

Merely making you whole for your economic losses does not make you whole for your physical and emotional pain. You might also have lasting scars that never go away.

❖

INSURANCE

Generally, in order to recover damages, the at-fault party needs to have insurance coverage or sufficient assets.
